Friendship bracelets went wonderfully. I decided that the blog was not nessesary as for last month so i forewent it.

This month i have been making a map-a-day.

I will get those up soon. I have limited access to a scanner as it is summer and too beautiful outside.

I have been learning a lot from the older folk at the community garden

they come on gently asking me question to assess whether i know anything about anything

then its on for a least a half an hour

good bugs, bad bugs, what grows, what doesn't, what keeps the dear away, oh hey look at that blue bird...

I am leaving for Chicago on wednesday for a printmaking conference. I am going to have to pack up all my planting stuff and bring it along. hopefully our hotel room gets good sun light.

I grew these in my garden for the first time last year.

Its magical really. The plant grows just like broccoli with big broad leaves and a thick stem but the little baby cabbages grow in the arm pits of the leaves. amazing! i moved before i could havest them last year.

The community garden it going wonderfully. We got horse poop for the beds today and my friends with chickens are going to give me their poop. I have honestly considered pooping in a bucket my self...im vegan it should theoretically make good compost right?

This is a tricky herb. It's essential oil is toxic and supposedly the herb form is an abortifacient.

Still just have the lemon balm, japanese eggplant, and stevia, roma, (from top) up, but i can feel it things are going to start really happening soon

First purple now orange! I am so over red and green.

Next Wednesday I go to get a tour of the community garden. I have to convince the coordinator that I very experienced and confident so that she deems my worthy of a large plot.

There are some nutty things happening in the glass ball jars. The water that has collcted in the bottom of them is beginning to grow algae, and there are mushrooms growing in the lower layers of the soil.

the romas and Japanese eggplants are doing splendidly.

Eggplant is hands down one of my favorite foods. I make a mean baked eggplant. Being able to walk into the backyard and grab a few eggplants for dinner. so amazing.

I have decided i am going to do a similar thing with these seedlings that i did with the muffins. I am going to make "plant vouchers" ill mail them out and leave them around town. The plan being for people to arrange a day in may for me to come plant one of the seedlings in their yard. This will be obviously local be also i hope to make trips to far away people. Its a shame you cant send plants in the mail...or can you...

I have yet to gain an appreciation for eating fresh tomatoes but these may do it. By all accounts they are aesthetically beautiful when ripe and palpably perfect. we'll see. The are indeterminate which means they can grow ten feet tall if i stake and cage them well enough.

The Romas are all sprouting now. YAY! thats whats in the photo below.
The stevia is up and i can just barely see a lavender about to poke out is first green baby leaf.

I got behind in my posts. I have to make a quick trip to p-burgh for the official Fun-A-Day art show. I was amazing Erin and Leanne did a fantastic job setting everything up. Danny-mac new witters space/empty house Cyber Punk Apocalypse was the perfect space for the show. Any way on friday i plant Echinacea. Its going to be an awesome addition to the killer herb garden going in at my new house.

oh and p.s. the photo of the sprouts i recently posted were not of tomatoes but of the stevia (and they said i wouldn't be able to get it to sprout!) any way the roma tomatoes are officially up now as well. Hopefully more will follow suit.

Japanese Eggplant

These type of eggplant are awesome for summer stir-frys. They're tender little sponges that soak up any and all flavors amazingly. I bought them every saturday at the farmers market this past summer. Hopefully I will get ill i need from my garden this year.

Parsley

Parsley is one of those things ill throw in pretty much anything im cooking if i think that thing needs a little green. It looks similar to cilantro but does not taste like soap. It also is great to plant near tomatoes in a garden because it attracts carnivorous bugs that like to eat the bad plant eating bugs.

The seeds I have panted so far are germinating away. At least another week until the buggers start popping up. i cant wait!

Roma Tomatoes

These are the best for making sauce. Sometimes they are called plum. Every summer my poppy would bring my mom the extra tomoatoes from his garden. We'd slice and dice. Cook them down till there skins dropped away. My mom has this tomato torture device that we'd scoop the cooked down goop into. It looks sort of a cross between sauce pan and a flour sifter

Then we'd make sauce or freeze the juice for delicious sauce making in the fall and winter.

I first was introduced to this natural alternative to sugar in a small vegan cafe restaurant I was working at in Emmaus, PA. Balasia, if your ever in that neck of the woods you should for sure check the place out.

I did a little research and due to some crazy FDA regulation stevia products must be labeled as a dietary supplement and their sweetness can not in anyway be mentioned. It was only recently that a full out ban on the plant was lifted...seriously what the FDA chooses to "protect" us from.

Also from what i have been reading ill be luck to get my stevia seeds to germinate. They like soil on the warmer side. Unfortunately the art building powers-that-be preemtively turned off the buildings heat, clearly not anticipating the sudden drop to sub freezing temperatures. I may go buy a heating pad to stick under the seedling flats to give them a bit of climate cusion.

I planted my first seeds today. Lavender.

My grandmother always planted lavender in her flower beds. I didn't have much use for her beds as a kid. My poppy's vegetable patch with its asparagus that grew so quick i could cut a new batch every day dominated my attention. The lavender though, tempted me. Sometimes i'd steal a sprig of the purple flowers and when ever gran wasn't looking and rub it across the space between my nose and lip. mmmm
